“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimension”
– Oliver Wendell Holmes
— Oscar Wild
This is going to be my first blog! I am always happy to share these experiences of mine for the benefit of all!
Honestly, I felt inadequate about joining this project but thanks to my family members and teachers, for they built my confidence!
SEA-Teacher 8th batch! A thrilling and exciting time for me to join in this project. This will be the 2nd time that my University (Capiz State University) is going to send student/s for this project. I am grateful for these opportunity that my University is going to send me in this project!
The purpose of the practicum is to achieve
the goal of the SEA-TEACHER Project which is to develop our teaching skills and
strategy, to practice and improve our English skills, and for us to gain a
broader regional and world view. Truly! This experience enhanced my English
skills more and I got new ideas about teaching strategies even just by
observing to the teachers.
One of the mentioned goals also of the
SEA-Teacher Project is to promote Unity between nations and to bridge the gap between
cultures. As an exchange student for just a month, I found something
interesting about the “how” behind the goals of the SEAMEO.
My insight about the “how” behind the goals
is that; the student-teachers are the future teachers of the future generation,
if the students-teachers have participated in the SEA-Teacher project and have
understood the cultures of another nation, and have experienced a good
experience while staying in another country, then if that student teacher will
become a teacher in the future, he or she will be able to impart his or her
good experiences while staying in a different country and thus the positive
knowledge will be installed in the minds of the students and the information
will go on for generations! If the good knowledge has been imparted to both
countries, then the people in each country will have a good mindset that will
result to peace and unity! Teachers can affect generations!
Participating in the SEA-Teacher project can also create or mold Student-Teachers to become Global teachers in which they can handle diverse learners!
2. Procedures of Practicum
I was first recommended by our MAPEH (Music, Arts,
Physical Education, and Health) Coordinator as a participant for this project.
After being recommended and a confirmation from my parents that they are
permitting me to join in this project, I began preparing necessary things and
things to do for this project like medical examinations, processing my
passport, attending several orientations, buying plane tickets, and etc.
I arrived here in Yogyakarta in the morning of August 19,
2019. I was met by my buddy (Yoga) at the airport and accompany me to somewhere
I needed to be.
Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (my receiving University)
treated me well here. The people who are in charge for this program did well in
accommodating me. I stayed for 29 days in one of their guesthouse which is
located in Deresan IV Street at Depok, Sleman, Caturtunggal.
Miss Tiara; the person in charge in this school keeps on
communicating with me and giving me updates, Miss Ria; who works at the same
office helped also in arranging the accommodation. From time to time, my
buddies (Yoga and Mawas) help me in my needs as a newbie in Yogyakarta.
During my first week before the start of my observation
at the school, Dr. Soni (Sports Coordinator of UNY), Yoga and I went to the
cooperating school which is the Budi Mulia Dua Pandeansari Elementary School
and introduced me there to some of the school faculty and staff, and to my
cooperating teachers. On Thursday, I had series of lectures and meeting from
different officials of the University; Dr. Dyah gave a lecture to me about the
introduction to bahasa Indonesia language and trained me on how to speak bahasa
and some basic words and important phrases. I also met Dr. Wahyu who talked to
me about the University and about the program.
My first day of observation was on Friday of my first
week here in Yogyakarta. Miss Tika (my cooperating teacher) helps me in my
adjustments to the school at first and oversees me until my last week of my
stay in the school. Mr. Wawan (Sports teacher) is also there to help me in
observing his class so that I would know what to do when I will teach
independently to the students and he also observed and rated me during my
teaching.
There were also cultural tours or excursions that were
scheduled by the receiving university in some of my Saturdays.
Indeed, the procedure in this practicum ran smoothly and has some organized schedules up until my last day where they drove me to the Yogyakarta Airport and bid Goodbye to each other!
3. Outcomes of Practicum
I believe that Experience is the best teacher, I also
believe in the saying “good man learns from his own mistakes, but better man
learns from the mistakes of others”.
This practicum has brought so much in me that I would not
probably learned when I did not came here.
First of all, I learned to be more independent than
before because the success of my practicum depends on the choices that I will
be making each day! I learned more on how to be independent in making wise
choices and on how did I spent my time, because I believe that my success will
depend on how do I spend my time wisely.
The result of this practicum is unpredicted and the
effect of this practicum will still continue even after the result has been
seen. Truly, this practicum paved the way for me and some students to become
Global Teacher in which we could handle different kinds of learners.
The result of this practicum was that I was able to gain
teaching strategies, methods, and style to become a better future teacher! I
think these things are the reward for these could not be bought in any amount
of money because experiences gained from a specific event of time could not
come back after it happened!
I am grateful that I have spent my time in investing or participating in this kind of event! I am grateful that I have gained seeds of knowledge during this experience and I am looking forward to nurture the seeds of knowledge that I have gained in order to grow and to see the fruits of it!
4. The Challenges of Practicum
The most challenging part of my practicum so far is the
Language. Language is one of the most important medium because if I am able to
speak in Bahasa, then the students could understand what I am saying, if the
students understand what I am saying, then everything will then follow for
good; just like you will be able to handle classroom management, a quality or
good motivation, etc.
Other than the language challenge that I had, I could not
remember any challenges that arose during my practicum or during my stay in the
guesthouse and in the school where I am doing my observation and my practice
teaching.
Before I went in Yogyakarta and during my stay there, I
have learned simple and important words and phrases to help me communicate in
my everyday life here, I also tried learning basic sentence construction in
bahasa and I listed some of the verbs, adjectives, adverbs, nouns and pronouns
in my language notebook but it was quite different in actual conversational
scenarios.
But I am thankful for my cooperating teacher (Miss Tika) for helping me in my communication needs. I am thankful also for my buddies for accompanying me everywhere I go and attends to my communication needs!
5. Overall Impression
My overall impression to the program is good! I did not
encounter any problems with the receiving school and the cooperating school
since I got here. I also did not encounter concerns between me and my
cooperating teachers.
SEA-Teacher Project Batch 8 has done something
in the lives of the students that they could pass it from one generation to
another. The outcomes of this project could be a domino effect in the future
from a simple and small effect that could be of great thing in the future!
Before the week that I will be teaching independently, I
first made a detailed lesson plans; stating everything what I am going to say
and stating the possible responses of the learners. Next, I translated my
lesson plans into Bahasa Indonesia language for me to be familiar of the terms
and phrases to use during the class. After
translating, I submitted my lesson plans to my cooperating teachers for some
corrections in my bahasa translation of my lesson plans.
We usually held our Physical Education (Sports) classes
outside the classroom (in an open area) so that the students can execute the
exercises or drills well.
I started every class with a prayer first before the
discussion or lesson. Since I am not a Muslim and I do not know their prayers,
I used to ask Mr. Wawan (Cooperating teacher) or invite a student to lead the
prayer before the class discussion, but at my last lesson which is my
demonstration, I was able to lead the opening prayer and the closing prayer to
the class. After the prayer comes the motivation before going to the lesson
proper. I always conduct games for the students to play before the start of the
discussion since elementary students will become interested and more active to
the lesson when they do enjoy; and of course, the games are connected to the
lesson. After the motivation comes the discussion. I usually demonstrate the
skills while saying the instructions first before letting them try and
practice. After letting them try to figure and practice how to do the skills
right, I will then create a drill and let them practice the proper execution of
the skills though the drills. After the drill comes another game in which the
skills that was discussed in the lesson will be applied- this is how I did in the
lesson flow.
After the application, I usually gather the class for the summary and the generalization; correcting for the proper way of doing the skill, then a prayer at the end of each classes.
2. Time Management and Organizing Activities
Time is one of the most important elements in teaching
and in learning. The effectiveness of the teaching process depends on how do
teachers manage their time for teaching and during teaching.
For the efficient use of time, I considered first the
fact that there might be some changes or alternation of plans in the actual lesson;
it means that I could not follow exactly the lesson flow and I might change it
according to the needs of the learners during the actual lesson. I also
considered that the learners might not understand me almost all the time due to
the language difference.
Communication to the students is one of the most
important tools for organizing activities and managing the activities. The day
before the discussion, I used to list down and familiarize simple phrases in
Bahasa Indonesia language in order for the students to understand me even just
for a little bit whenever I will give instructions to them (aside from having
what I will say; the listed words written in the detailed lesson plan).
Aside from having a detailed lesson plan, I also have the semi-detailed lesson plans in which it has the time frame on how long a certain activity will last; for example, the motivation (games) should not exceed 15 minutes, the drill should not exceed 20 minutes, etc., and during the lesson, I see to it that the activities will not exceed the allotted time.
3. Problem-Solving
Problems and concerns are the things we don’t want to
happen, but these are important because without these, we will not grow!
Problems and concerns help us sharpen our minds by using our critical thinking
and decision skills!
I could not think of any problem/s here during my
practice teaching than the LANGUAGE.
I had to consume a lot of time typing words and phrases
in my phone and translating it to bahasa Indonesia language using a translator
app first, then writing it in a notebook so that I could find the words through
the notes.
What I did in order to make this concern/problem easier
was; of course I have to use the translator app a lot. Aside from using the
translator app, I also ask my buddy (Yoga and Mawas) and my cooperating teacher
(Miss Tika) about the Indonesian words or terms that I will be using if it is
right then I have to remember the right words and the right way to say it.
Another thing that I did was taking down verbs, adjectives, adverbs,
nouns/pronouns, etc. that I might be using a lot during my stay here then, learned
how to construct basic or simple sentences in Indonesian language. Another
thing that I did was I listed some Indonesian phrases that I think it will be
useful for me like “Apakah anda besa berbahasa Inggris?” (Do you speak
English?), “Maaf, saya tidak bisa bahasa Indonesia” (Sorry, I do not speak
Indonesian), etc. in order for me to use it mostly outside the school in asking
for directions, buying something, etc.
Anyway, I am glad that people do understand me if I cannot say the exact words that should be coming out of my mouth. I felt comfortable in my communication to the people that I have encountered with everyday even though I had a language barrier with them.
4. Classroom Management
I would describe classroom management as how did I handle
or manage challenges that arose during my practicum, specifically during my
teaching in the classes. There were a number of challenges or problems that I
had while in the class delivering the lesson; first was that if the students
were noisy during the lesson or they are being distracted by something and they
became less attentive to the lesson. Another challenge that I have encountered during
the practicum was if the students could not understand my instructions or the
words that I am saying even if it was in Bahasa Indonesia language.
Whenever the first mentioned concern arouse, I would
usually raise my voice volume while speaking to the students without being or
getting angry, or if they I could not get their attention by raising my voice
volume, I would pause (be silent) for a little bit of time until the students
will wonder why I stopped talking, after they became curious and silent, then
it will be the time for me to resume talking to them. Another thing that
usually happened when the students were noisy was that Mr. Wawan would come
voluntarily help in making the students behave.
If the second concern arouse, what I would
usually do was; I would usually go to my cooperating teacher and ask him about
the right terms to say certain words in Bahasa Indonesia. Aside from asking him
about the right terms, I would usually request him or a student to interpret
the meaning of what I am trying to say to the students. I would usually do some
actions while saying the instructions in front of the students then after that,
Mr. Wawan would further explain the instructions for the better understanding
of the learners.
Budi Mulia Dua Pandeansari Elementary School is following the K-13 Curriculum. Budi Mulia Dua aims to be an International School soon; for this reason, the subjects English, Mathematics, and Science in the School is following the Cambridge Curriculum. Actually the curriculum of the Budi Mulia Dua is a combined curriculum from other curriculum and was created for implementation by the Budi Mulia Dua Foundation Academic Director who is Dr. Tazniem Fauzia Rais.
2. Teaching Plan
The teachers of the school usually do a lesson plan out
of the guidebooks that are given to them by the Budi Mulia Dua foundation. The
teachers make the guidebook as a reference in making lesson plans. The Budi
Mulia Dua Foundation does not send ready-made lesson plans so that all Budi Mulia
Dua schools have a synchronized pattern of delivering lessons, instead, the
teachers are free to construct and make lesson plans based on the needs of the
students and the materials available at the school and etc.
I have made a lesson plan of my major but I have made it
the way we do our lesson plans in our University.
I did a “detailed lesson plan” about the lesson: Basic
Skills in Soccer. This detailed lesson plan contains the phrases of what the
teacher is going to say and do, and the possible responses and actions of the
students during the class. This detailed lesson plan will help me communicate
more to the students by stating first the phases in English and then use Google
online translator to translate phrases in English to bahasa Indonesia language
then say it to the students:

I. LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
recall the four basic skills in soccer;
2. execute the four basic skills in soccer; and
3. be motivated to continue practicing the four basic skills.

of their classmates.
Next,
each group should divide themselves into two, and then the other half of the
group should form your line in this area (pointing the place); you must be
facing each other with your group mates.
Students
in each group are forming another line and going to the place assigned for
them.
Okay, I
guess you are all ready to listen, raise your hands if you are ready to
learn.
The
students raise their hands to indicate that they are ready to listen.

Right
now, I am going to introduce the four basic skills in soccer. These are the;
inside foot kick, instep kick, inner leg stop and outside leg stop.
What
are the four basic skills again?
Sir,
the four skills are the inside foot kick, instep kick, and inner leg stop and
outside leg stop!
Good! I
am now going demonstrate on how to perform the skills, are you ready to
listen?
Yes
sir!
So here
we go. First is the Inside foot kick, to do an inside foot kick you must;
Rest your non
kicking foot at the side of the ball. The direction of your non kicking foot
should point to the direction you wanted the ball to go.Swing your
kicking foot towards the ball and kick! The inner side of your kicking foot
should touch the ball and the ball should be hit in the middle.
(the teacher demonstrates while saying
the direction)
The students are
observing on how to kick the ball using the inside of the foot.
Did you
understand it?
Yes
sir!
Okay,
next is the kick using your instep. To do that, you must;
Rest your non
kicking foot at the side of the ball. The direction of your non kicking foot
should point to the direction you wanted the ball to go.Swing your
kicking foot towards the ball and kick! The upper part of your kicking foot
should touch the ball and the ball should be hit by your kicking foot below
the middle part of the ball.
(the teacher demonstrates while saying
the direction)
The students are
observing on how to kick the ball using the inside of the foot.
Good!
Next is how to stop or receive the ball using the inner leg. To do that, you
must;
Raise your
receiving leg with your knee bent outward.Raise your foot
slightly upon contact with the ball; the middle part of the ball should hit
your inner part of your receiving foot.
(the teacher demonstrates while saying
the direction, the teacher will also ask one student to kick the ball to him)
The students are
jumping when they heard the whistle blow from the teacher.
Did you
understand it?
Yes
sir!
Good!
Next is how to stop or receive the ball using the outside leg. To do that,
you must;
Raise your
receiving leg with your body facing sideward to the ball.Raise your foot
slightly upon contact with the ball; the middle part of the ball should hit
your outer part of your receiving foot.
(the teacher demonstrates while saying
the direction, the teacher will also ask one student to kick the ball to him)
The students observes
the demonstration of the teacher.
Did you
understand it?
Yes
sir!
Good!
Right now, I am going to give each group one ball and you are going to
practice the four basic skills in soccer.
(the
teacher gives each group a ball)
First
students in the line receive the ball and put it in the ground in front of
them.
This is
the instruction, attention please!
(the
teacher will demonstrate the drill first)
The first student in the line will pass the ball by inside foot
kicking it to the first students the line in front of them. The student in front of the student kicking will receive the ball by
stopping using the inner leg. After the ball is stopped by the one receiving, he/she will pass the
ball to the same student by using inside foot. The receiving students will stop the ball by using inner leg, and
then pass the ball to the same student by using instep. The student receiving will stop the ball by using outside leg, and
then pass the ball to the same student by using instep. The receiving student will stop the ball by using outside leg. After the two students from each side of the groups perform the 4
basic skills, they will then move to the end of the line so that the students
behind them could perform the same drill. The routine of the drill will continue so that all students might
have an equal participation.
Students
are paying attention to the demonstration of the teacher.
Okay, I
think everybody is ready for the drill!
I will
give you 15 minutes to do the drill.
Ready?
Go!
The
students start the drill.
(after
15 minutes)
Time is
up! Did you all do well in practicing the drill?
Yes
Sir!
D. APPLICATION
The teacher sets the time
for the students to apply what they have learned about the four basic skills in
soccer through a game or a drill. The game will last for 15 minutes.
Teacher’s Activity
Student’s
Activity
Good!
Right now, we are going to have another drill. First, I need the other half
of the group to line beside their group.
The
students form their line beside their group mate’s line (with a fair
distance) while the teacher is setting up cones.
Alright,
so the next drill should be this way;
(the
teacher demonstrates the drill first)
The first students in the line will pass the ball to their group mate
at the other line beside them by using inside foot then their group mate will
receive it with inner leg.The goal is to pass and receive the ball back and forth until they
will arrive at the end area. After arriving at the end area, the students are to pass and receive
the ball back and forth again but this time, they are going to use instep and
outside leg until they arrive at the starting area.
The rotation will be the same as the first game
where after the students arrive at the starting area, they will move at the
back of the line so that the student next to them will be the one who will
perform next.
The
students are observing the demonstration of the teacher.
Did you
all understand the instructions?
Yes
Sir!
I guess
you are all ready.
So the
game will begin in three, two, one, go!
The
students start the game.
(after
15 minutes)
Time is

one by one to come in front for a performance test.
The
students sit at the side and waiting for their names to be called.
IV. EVALUATION (Performance test)
Then
teacher will call the students one by one for the performance test. The teacher
will let the students kick and receive the ball by using the 4 basic skills.
The teacher will be the receiver if the student will perform kicks and the
teacher will be the one to kick to the student will perform receiving or
stopping. The students will be graded individually based on the rubric below:

V. ASSIGNMENT
Search about how to stop
a bouncing ball Soccer with the inside foot, outside foot, and soles of the
feet. Search and learn on how to execute the skills right.
The teaching
methods of the teachers are mostly Students-Centered Methods. During the
lesson proper in the sports class, the teacher would only give instructions to
the students and demonstrates a skill to the students, after that, there would
be a drill and after the drill, the students will be given an allotted time for
practice before the evaluation or performance test.
The teacher
always uses also Participative or Interactive Methods. In some subjects
that I also had the chance to observe (English, Math, Science, Music), the
teachers usually let the students do group works and sit works and discuss it
after an allotted time. In this way, the students will be able to participate
in the class by saying something connected to the lesson.
The teachers
also use constructive way of teaching during class. Most of the students in the
class are “Learning by Doing” something. Usually in some subject like
Mathematics, if the lesson is about “Fraction”, the teacher would let the
students bring actual objects (like bread or cake) and then the students would
divide the object during the lesson about fraction.
The methods and strategies that the teachers are using are almost Scientific Method and are effective and you can see the results out of it!
2. Their Learning Materials and Innovation
In every
sports class, since the students are elementary and like to have fun, the
teacher should be very creative in doing motivation for the students or else
the students will lose their focus on the teacher or the lesson.
Based on my
observation, the sports teacher creates a game first as a motivation before the
lesson proper and let the students play the game. The game is usually connected
to the lesson proper.
The Teachers
also uses Cooperative Learning inside the classroom. The teachers would
let the class group into a specific number then practice something or letting
them figure out about something in the lesson.
For the other subjects, teachers would use the resources like guidebook, the computer laboratory, and most especially the things inside the classroom for teaching.
3. Sources of Learning and Technology Used by the Teachers
The teachers
in the school mostly uses guide books for creating lesson plans, books for the
references and technology to make the learning process effective and efficient.
As I
observed, teachers usually prepare the lesson in the way that the students will
be motivated or interested to learn. Since the teachers are teaching elementary
students, they must be creative in delivering their lessons.
Aside from
using the projector in the multi-media room so that the teachers can project
something during the class like videos (during some classes like recreation
class where the teacher introduce a dance to the students through a video), the
teachers mostly uses visual materials and items for the students to learn while
they are doing it hands-on; for example, in the English class, the teacher do not
usually uses the projector during the class but instead, the teacher uses alphabet
flash cards during lessons, toys like animal toys and during the English
lesson, the teacher would let the students separate the farm animals, the wild
animals, and the sea animals, then the teacher would let the students describe
and compare the animals by using English language. For the mathematics subject,
the teacher uses materials like marbles to let the students solve something by
adding, subtracting, etc. to the number of marbles.
For the
students’ music class, the music teacher would use some instruments like
keyboard in teaching students the tune of a song, sometime the teacher uses a
portable speaker to let the students listen to a song. In the students’ Sports
class, since most of the elementary students are only beginning to learn a
sport, the teacher would usually use substitute materials in teaching some
Sports to the students; just like in teaching baseball to the grade 2 pupils,
the teacher would let the students use baseball equipment toys rather than the
real ones for the students’ safety, etc.
The Budi Mulia Dua foundation is also sending budget to the school for the purchasing of learning materials of the teachers. Recently, there was a material that arrive for English teachers; a movable letters box- a learning material for English teacher in teaching the subject for grade 1 pupils.
4. Authentic Assessment used by the Teachers
Most of the
teachers’ assessment styles are authentic because they are aware of the
importance of authentic assessment in the measurement of intellectual capacity
of the learners.
Some examples
of the authentic assessments that the teachers used were; performance skills-
mostly done every day in Physical Education (Sports) subject for the teacher to
evaluate the realistic capacity of the students; English and Science teachers
usually let the students role play a particular situation during class, oral
examination were also done to the students to confirm if the students really
understood the lesson of the day and if the students really absorb the lesson
for the day.
Authentic assessments and Performance test are usually accompanied by rubrics as a guide for teachers on how to rate the students’ performance in which the teachers should also make wise judgments in scoring the students based on the rubrics.
5. Others
Budi Mulia
Dua Pandeansari is an inclusive school. It means that the school is carrying
out a common learning environment for different kinds or diverse learners. The
school does have a number of students with special needs in which they are
being put together with other students inside the classroom and let them
experience a sense of belonging and a common environment for all.
In some of
the classrooms where the student/s with special needs is staying, there would
be a teacher assigned to them to help them in every classes of the day. In the
room where I am staying during my observation and teaching in the school, there
is one student with a special needs and there is also one teacher that stays
the whole day beside that student to help working on the student’s sit works
and class performances.
The students
in the school are also aware that they have classmates with special needs, but
I admire how they treat their classmate/s that has special needs; the students
would treat them normally the same way as they treat their other classmates.
Another nice
thing about the school is that; the students and teachers need not to go out
from the room and go out from the school campus during break time in the
morning and lunch time at noon because the school provides snacks in the
morning and lunch to the students and teachers only if they have paid for it. I
think this is a nice way to save time!

History
A BRIEF HISTORY
Budi Mulia Kindergarten was founded by our Founder, Mrs.
Kusnasriyati Sri Rahayu and Mr. Amien Rais on April 26, 1987.
Since they were young, Mr. Amien Rais and Ibu always
emphasized the importance of having a “Declaration of Life” in this life.
That is, what is the purpose of our lives in this world. “What is our
purpose in life?”
The Declaration of Life of a human being can be realized
in the form of his life’s charity while in the world as a form of savings in
the hereafter. Then was born Budi Mulia Dua (World Hereafter) as a form of
world practice for savings in the End Times.
Budi Mulia Dua started from a small mosque from the
corner of the house of Mr. and Mrs. Amien Rais, which was turned into a
kindergarten. From there was born Budi Mulia Dua Pandean Sari Kindergarten in
1987.
As the development of the world of education and to meet
the community’s needs for early childhood education, Budi Mulia Dua also opened
a kindergarten in Terban Yogyakarta, and then also opened a kindergarten and
Playgroup in Seturan and Sedayu Yogyakarta.
Over time, with endless endeavors, and continuing to pray
to Allah SWT, Budi Mulia Dua now has 16 school units ranging from baby day care
to high school level even to the elderly, namely:
-Baby Day Care Pandean Sari
-Baby Day Care Brojo
-Playgroup and Kindergarten Pandean Sari
-Playgroup and Kindergarten Seturan
-Playgroup and Kindergarten Student Park
-Playgroup and Kindergarten Terban
-Playgroup and Kindergarten Sedayu
-SD Panjen (formerly in Seturan, now in Panjen)
-SD Pandean Sari
-SD Sedayu
-SMP Panjen
-Panjen High School
-BKK Panjen
-Qur’an Learning Center (Equivalent to Madrasah Aliyah)
Panjen
-GGC (Gold Geriatric Club) School for the elderly.
The total schools we have are: 17 school units
In addition to these educational institutions, Budi Mulia
Dua also opened business units such as: Budi Mulia Dua Cooperative, Pandeansari
Cooperative, Savings and Loan Cooperative, Seturan Unit, Supermarkets Rahayu,
Rahayu Canteen, Sri Rahayu Modiste, Salsabiela Indoor Swimming Pool, Budi Mulia
Culinary Catering Two, and so on.
Hopefully the spirit of “Life is worship” at
Budi Mulia Dua can become our worship charity for all who move at this
Foundation, and hopefully in the future, our students can become a generation
that can bring Indonesia to become a more reliable and fragrant nation in the
eyes world.
Academic
Support System
Aside from the teaching materials and resources that the
teachers and the student are using in this school like books technology like
computers, there would be some programs that the school is implementing or
offering.
The school has weekly, monthly and semester literacy
activities and programs. Book fair, storytelling competition, and story writing
competitions are the literacy programs that happens at the end of the semester.
Enhancement activity is held every afternoon for 1 hour (2:30 to 3:30 pm). The interested students would usually spend the time practicing and playing Soccer, practicing Archery in which he school has the equipment for Archery and participating in a Martial Art class (Tapak Suci). The students would engage or prepare themselves to engage in extra-curricular activities like sports during this time.
Every Afternoon right after the classes’ ends, there are
somewhat like a “Market Time” which they called Entrepreneur Time where
students can sell foods they made to their fellow students and teachers. This
program awakens then entrepreneur skills of the young learners.
Also, during my observation in this school, there is a
time (10:35-11:30 am) where the students were creating something out of their
creativity (hand-made notebook covers, toy car out of recyclable materials,
etc.), it is called “BMD Exploration”. There would be a scheduled activity in
the school at the end of the semester where the students would display or
exhibit their finished work- this program awakens the creativity of the young
minds!
Teaching
System
The Schools start their class on the first
subject at 7:30 am, then a lunch break at 11:30 am, after the lunch break, the
class would resume at 12:30 pm then ends at 2:15 in the afternoon for Grade 3
until Grade 6, but for the grades 1 and 2, the class ends at 1:40 in the
afternoon.
The lesson in each subject should last or
should be taught to the class for 140 minutes per week. Most of the lessons in
each subject are 70 minutes and are taught twice a week, but it also depends on
the circumstances and the availability of the teachers and students. Cases like
a 105 minute in one day of the week and a 35 minute class in another day of the
week is possible and accepted.
The sports program for the subject Physical
Education (Sports) in this school only has two meetings every week and usually
the Sports class would happen only in the morning.
Their Religion is being implemented in the
teaching system of the school. Most of the lesson plans have a guideline for
the teachers to teach first something that their Religion is teaching, then
after the discussion, the teacher would connect what they have discussed first
to the lesson proper of the day. All the subjects do have the same teaching
pattern even in sports.
The teachers in the first class the day would
lead the opening prayer, then the last teacher of the class would lead the
closing prayer. The school is also following the schedules or time fixed for
praying which; Subuh at 4:30 in the morning, Zuhur at 12:00 in the afternoon,
Ashar at 3:00 in the afternoon, Maghrib at 6:00 in the evening, and Isya at
7:00 in the evening. Every Friday at 11:30 in the afternoon, there is also an
exclusive prayer just for men and boys.
Materials and
Other Learning Resources
The school does have good learning resources
and materials. The teachers usually prepare their lesson plans one week in
advance because every end of weekdays, the teachers usually make a summary of
their next week’s lessons and then give it to the parents of the students so
that they would have a background about the upcoming lessons and that they
would help their kids learn the lessons in advance.
The school does have a Multimedia room (Computer
room) in which the students learn from the subject Information and Technology.
The school do have projector for the teachers to use if they want to project
something during the lesson.
Actually, the school is being renovated right
now; they are renovating to set the school facilities and classrooms into an
international standard.
There are good learning resources, for me as a P.E. Student-Teacher, I would usually see materials and equipment in every sports lesson.
Aside from learning materials, the teachers also (especially in the subject Sports) would invite resource persons to teach the students about some specific topics (example; during the martial arts class and archery, the teachers in sports would invite someone to teach the students, they would invite resource persons to be the trainers and coaches of the students in a sport).
In every classroom, there are book shelves
with books (mostly religious books) placed for the students to learn and read
during their free time.
The teachers of the school usually aligned
their lesson plans to the guidelines given them from Budi Mulia Dua Foundation.
Measurement
and Evaluation System
The Teachers in the School is measuring the performance
of the students through daily assessment works test which happens every day.
Daily assessment works would be a written examination or a performance
examination. In their Sports class, most of the evaluation system of the
teachers is performance tests. Every Physical Education class (or P.E. Class),
the teachers would conduct an evaluation at the end of the class through a
performance test to measure the skill of the students.
There is also a Competence tests for the students in
which it happens twice every semester- one before the midterm examination and
another before the final examination. The Competency test is conducted to
measure the knowledge and skills of the students, most of these tests are not
written examinations but kind of like a practicum and performances.
Curriculum
Budi Mulia Dua Pandeansari Elementary School is following the K-13 Curriculum. Budi Mulia Dua aims to be an International School soon; for this reason, the subjects English, Mathematics, and Science in the School is following the Cambridge Curriculum. Actually the curriculum of the Budi Mulia Dua is a combined curriculum from other curriculum and was created for implementation by the Budi Mulia Dua Foundation Academic Director who is Dr. Tazniem Fauzia Rais.
Teaching Plan
The teachers
of the school usually based their lesson plan to the lesson guidelines given
the by the foundation. The lesson plans guidelines and references that are
given to the teachers were very detailed but in the schools but the teachers
are free to arrange their lesson plans based on the needs of the learners, for
these reason; the teachers make a semi-detailed lesson out of the detailed
lesson plans that was given to them.
The lesson
plan below is a sample of a semi-detailed lesson that I made after the pattern
of the semi-detailed lesson plan of the school:

This day is going to be my second to the last day in Indonesia. I spent my morning attending church (which I usually did every Sundays and I went to church for the fourth time now here in Yogyakarta). My buddy Mawas drove me to the church, after the church services, I went back to the guesthouse to rest and to packed my things for tomorrow’s departure. I did went out much this day instead, I spent my last Sunday here in Yogayakarta resting, packing and thinking about what will happen next after returning home. I started to have a mixed feeling of being happy and sad; happy because I did what I have to do during my stay here in Yogyakarta as an exchange student and I have to return home shortly; and sad because I will be missing everything here; I will be missing the kids at school, my experiences, the places, the food and many more.
This night, I and Mawas went to a Mie Ayam place for our dinner. We ate Mie Ayam and I find it delicious! I somehow regret why I only tried Mie Ayam just now because I like it! Anyway, after the dinner, we went to a near grocery store to buy something and went back to the guesthouse. I rested early this night for tomorrow’s travel.

September 16, 2019:
I woke up early in the morning and prepared everything necessary for my travel back to Roxas City, Capiz, Philippines. I finalized on packing my things and bags for a convenient travel. The school van picked me up from the guesthouse to the Adisutjipto International Airport. My buddy Mawas drove me to the airport. During our travel from the guesthouse up to the airport, I was very silent because I was thinking about the missing everything here in Yogyakarta. It was hard for me to start a conversation because of the mixed feelings of sadness and happiness.
It was hard for me to think that I will be leaving now because I felt like being united with everyone whom I associated. The day by day activities that happened resulted to unity even though I am different with them. The things that happened for the last 29 days somehow became a part of the whole “unity” experience that I felt even though most of the time, these steps to unity are unrecognizable!
We took our last pictures before going in to the airport. I also met Miss Anggie; an exchange student from UNY (Universitas Nigeri Yogyakarta) to my university (Capiz State University) at the airport. She arrived back in Yogyakarta three days before my departure. We met at the airport and we talked and shared our experiences even for a little bit of time before I enter inside to check in. It was a great reunion for us!
The plane left Yogyakarta about 11:35 a.m. and arrived at Jakarta about 12:45 p.m. then waited at Jakarta airport for about 12 hours because my flight was at 12:10 in the morning. I am glad that I was able to do things that I will not be feeling boring while waiting at the airport. The plane left from Jakarta and I arrived in Manila, Philippines about 5:50 in the morning.

Arriving Safely and my REFLECTIONS
I stayed and waited for about 8 hours at NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) for my flight back to Roxas City, Capiz. I am glad again that I was able to do things that will not make me feel boring while waiting at the Airport. I arrived safely in my place about 5 p.m. and I was fetched by the school van, my adviser, and my classmates and drove me home!
I am glad that I was able to travel safely and I am grateful for everyone both here in my place and back there in Yogyakarta, Indonesia who became a part of this success! Surely this experience will never be forgotten and will be truly cherished.
I will be glad to impart what I learned there in Indonesia during the SEA-Teacher Project Student Exchange here in the Philippines. I will be happy to take Filipinos to Indonesia even just by sharing the culture, my experiences, good memories and stories back there.
For me, the SEA-Teacher Project is not only about accomplishing their goals but also this project is binding the Nations to unity in a step by step small ways!
How or why did I say that?
Well,
I am trying to think in advance; one nature of a person is that if you are
going to do good things to other people, most likely they will also return good
things to you; so as a student exchange for one month, I have experienced the
good things Indonesians did so probably as a future teacher, I might share the
good things to my future students in which they are going to have a good
mindset about the people of the other country; as teachers, we are not only
capable of influencing groups of people but also generations! If this
SEA-Teacher project will produce lots of exchange students which can impart the
good things they have experienced in the other countries, then at the future,
different countries might have a greater unity because of the good mindset of
knowledge which has been passed down from one generation to another!
This is going to be my last Saturday in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I already have a mixed emotion because I will be leaving soon. This day, we went to the two beaches here in Yogyakarta. We rode the school van in going there. We were five in all including the driver (Me, Mawas, Maan, and Nisa).
The first beach that we went was the Guacemara Beach. I was little surprised because unlike in my home place, I have not seen any coconut trees in the beach, and also I was surprised of the waves in the beach. The waves were bigger and stronger than the waves in the beach in my home place, but it was an enjoying day! We took a lot of pictures and even though it was a sunny day, we have not felt the hotness of the day because of the cool winds that comes from the breeze of the ocean!
At Guacemara Beach
Feeling the cool breeze!
The second beach that we went was the Pantai Baru beach. The Pantai Baru beach was kind of like the Guacemara beach in terms of its land form or the geographical features but the difference was that the Pantai Baru beach has a lot of fishing boats at its sea shore and there were also lots of “restaurants” beside the seashore. We took our lunch there in the Pantai Baru beach; we ate delicious sea foods and were filled!
A lunch at the Sea Side
At Pantai Baru Beach
After going back to the guesthouse, we rested for a little bit and then went to some places to buy additional “pasalubong” for the people back home. Mas Mawas accompanied me again to the traditional market and Malioboro. We also went again to the Miss Tiara’s Husband’s Batik Store and bought additional Batik clothes and t-shirts.
This night, the four of us (Me, Mawas, Nissa, and Maan) went to a restaurant for a dinner. The name of the restaurant is “almond”; it is actually a bakery but they put a restaurant at the second floor of their building- it’s a fine dining place. We ordered our desired food and drinks then waited while they prepared our order. The dinner was like a “farewell” dinner for me. Miss Tiara wanted to join the dinner but she was not able to come because of unexpected circumstances. We ate our dinner after the food was served and was filled again!
Before going back to the guesthouse, we went to Alun-Alun and stayed there to chill for a little bit. We had a fine time at Alun-Alun roaming around and taking pictures. There were also a lot of people there and a lot of vendors. It was like that the Alun-Alun place never sleeps! We had a nice chill time there before going back to the guesthouse!
This day, the UNY arranged a closing program for the student exchange. The program will be at 1 o’clock in the afternoon but still, I woke up early in the morning for something to do. My last day at the Elementary school was yesterday but still this 9 in the morning, I went to school to bid farewell to the students. I made a box and pasted pictures in it, then, I put chocolates inside the box for the students and for my cooperating teachers. I went there before their break time at 9 am and stayed there until their break time. The teachers invited me for picture taking at the smart class of the school; the picture taking was for the documentation of the school to be used for their accreditation.

This 1 pm, the program started and was attended by some key officials of the receiving school (UNY) and the school heads and the cooperating teachers of my cooperating school (BMD Pandeansari) and Maan’s cooperating school (Maan is an exchange student also from the Philippines). The program went successful this afternoon, we started with the speeches of the key officials of the receiving school (Universitas Nigeri Yogyakarta), after their speeches, the key officials of our cooperating school also gave their speeches and after that, we also gave delivered our speeches to them. The content of our speech was about our experiences during the 1 month exchange student program/practice teaching, our impression about the program, etc.
I started my speech with a real-life story during World War II about a German soldier who did well to their Russian prisoners, he would usually feed them and talk to them, there he met one Russian prisoner who was a teacher and eventually, they became friends. The German soldier was transferred then to a battle field and there they were captured by the Russian soldiers. They were sentenced to death the next day but the night before their execution, there came one Russian soldier and to his surprise, that was the Russian teacher whom he had befriended! The Russian teacher helped them out of the prison and escape.
After telling the story, I then relate the story to my situation as an exchange student from a different country and different culture. I liken the story to my situation and how the SEA-Teacher Project can influence different countries to have unity to each other. I also included in my speech thanking every person who made our practicum here possible and successful.
We ended the program well, before departing, we had an awarding of certificates to us and to our cooperating school and as well as to our cooperating teachers.

After the program, my buddy Mawas accompanied me in buying things and stuffs to bring home like souvenirs. We went to a lot of places to buy “Pasalubong” (something to take home and to give to someone that were from the place you have been). We went to the Traditional Market and buy stuffs, we went to Chocolate Monggo and bought chocolates and the last place that we went was the Batik store of the husband of Miss Tiara, I bought there printed t-shirts and also Batik for remembrance! What a day! I am grateful for the success of today’s activities. Surely I am going to miss this experiences!
This day is going to be a big day for me! I am going to have a class with the grade 2 students this morning and Dr. Soni (UNY’s Sports Coordinator) is going to observe me this day so I woke up early in the morning and prepared everything for the demonstration. I already listed down important phrases that I am going to use for today’s lesson. I also stayed late at yesterday night thinking about my demonstration this day.
Before going to school, Miss Tika told me to prepare the lesson plans that I have made and give it to Dr. Soni later, so I printed the lesson plans first before going to the school, my buddy Mas Mawas helped me in going to the printing shop and going to school. Thanks a lot!
The class for the grade 2 students was at 8 o’clock in the morning, I prepared the necessary things for the class like cones and jump ropes. My lesson for the grade 2 students was about jumping and rope jumping. I started the class with a prayer (I was the one who led the prayer during the class). Then after the prayer was the warm up game in which I let the class form three lines (with equal number of students in each line). I gave each line a plastic plate and the mechanics of the game was that the students should put the plastic plates between their knees and jump to the front, around the cones and get back to their line to pass the plastic plates; they should not touch the plastics plates between their knees with their hands while jumping. I thought about this game because it is connected to the lesson which is “Jumping and Rope Jumping”
A jumping game before the lesson proper
Grade 2 students during the game
After the motivation was the lesson proper in which they performed 3 kinds of drills as a jumping practice. The jumping drills were kind of the same from the yesterday’s lesson but somehow I thought of some ways that I could modify the drills to adjust to the capacity of the grade 2 students. I am glad that the grade 2 students were able to do the drills correctly.
After the drills, I gathered them all and made a summary and evaluation for them. I am glad that I was able to deliver my instructions almost in Bahasa Indonesia Language (with the help of my notes). I was also the one who led the prayer in closing the class.
This morning was an exhausting yet, “worth the effort” day for me. I was able to apply the plans that I have been thinking and planning for the class. Dr. Soni stayed the whole hour for the observation even if he is busy. Mr. Wawan was also staying at my side and willing to help in making the students attentive to the instructions. There were also two other teachers of the section that was present during the class, their purpose was to ensure the safety of the students during the class but they also helped in the classroom management.
I am grateful for them that were present during the class, I felt like being united with them despite of the diversity especially in the language. Because of them, I was able to gain satisfaction of my lesson!
At noontime, after their prayer, I was invited to say a “farewell” speech for all at the school. The School principal (Mr. Sulton) requested me to say my speech just in English and there was an interpreter/translator (Miss Tika) while I am saying in the front. I am thankful for this privilege that I was able to say “Thank you” to all of them who are at my cooperating school (both the faculty and staff, and the students) for being kind with me all the time, for the smiles they have shared!
I tried to take a video while the students sing goodbye
It was impossible for me to take a video
Look! BMD Pandeansari gave me something after I bid farewell!
I
am going to miss this experience but I will never forget it!
I went to the school about 6:40 in the morning because we are going to have an evaluation meeting with my cooperating teachers and adviser before my classes start at 8 am. Mr. Wawan gave his feedback in his observations of me while Miss Tika translated our communication.
For the past two days that Mr. Wawan has been observing me, he gave his feedback to me constructively and I am glad that I have things to improve and work on. Some of the things that I needed to improve is the organization of spacing of students during the Physical Education drills; I need to set enough spaces during the drills in order for the students to move more comfortable and will not bump each other. Well, we had a nice evaluation/feedback meeting this morning and I am glad that there are things to improve in my teaching skills and I am happy for it to improve!
A picture with Mr. Wawan and Ms. Tika after the Feedbacking
This morning, I taught two classes. The first one was with the grade 3 students and the second one was with the grade 6 students. For the grade 3 students, I taught the same topic yesterday with the grade 1 students about rope jumping but I did some modifications in some of the parts of my lessons to suit their ability and skills. I did some modification in the drills to make it advanced for the grade 3 students. This first class, I learned on how to lead the opening prayer and the closing prayer to the students, Mr. Wawan taught me how to. The topic for second with the grade six students was about walking, running and jumping. I also prepared a game to be used as a motivation to them and I have also prepared a number of drills like “hop-step-jump” drill and jumping drill patterned with a rhythm.
The main topic for the second class was to introduce them a traditional game played by running, jumping or walking. Since I am not familiar with Indonesian traditional games, I introduced to the class 1 Philippine traditional game called “Luksong-Baka”. The aim of the game is that the players should avoid contact or falling over the “Baka”(it) while jumping over by using only the hands that could touch the back of the “Baka”(it).
While practicing the game “Luksong-Baka”, there were few students who did not manage to land to the ground well after jumping over the “Baka”(it), and I thought it could be risky or could cause injury if the game should continue. Well, instead of continuing the drill, I did modify the lesson instead for the sake of the safety of the students. I am glad that there were no serious injuries happened during the class.
I am glad that I was able to teach two lessons this day. Mr. Wawan was also present during the lesson and supervising the class. I am also consulting to Mr. Wawan if the activities or drills that I am going to let the students do were correct or safe. Thanks for the understanding of the students if they could not understand me well, thanks also to Mr. Wawan for helping me in terms of classroom management!

This day was a good day to me because I recognized the things that I should improve and the things to be considered before, during, and after each classes. Thanks for the corrections!
